Official Launching of the Program
May 30, 2008 at ESA Beirut

The Ecole Supérieure des Affaires (ESA) organized on Friday May 30, 2008 the launching of the XIFM program – Executive Master in Islamic Financial Management. XIFM is the first international program dedicated to Islamic Financial Management. It is organized in partnership with the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM).

On this occasion, ESA received His Excellency Mr. Robert Zeldenrust, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Lebanon, His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Jachi, First Vice Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, and Professor Jaap Spronk, Full Professor of Finance at the RSM and Academic Director of the XIFM. Professionals from the Islamic finance and insurance sectors were also present.

Mr. Roger Ourset, Dean and Director General of the ESA, inaugurated the ceremony by a welcoming speech where he announced the official launching of the XIFM indicating that the opening seminar will take place on October 9, 2008. He highlighted the objectives of the program that consist in training executives in the industry of Islamic Finance. Mr. Ourset stressed the importance of the ideal partnership between the ESA and the RSM, noting that it is the first time that two academic institutions decide to treat in depth issues relevant to Islamic financial management. Mr. Ourset also announced the establishment of an orientation committee composed of international personalities well-known for their competences, namely: Dr. Ahmad Jachi, First Vice Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, the Governor of the Central Bank of Luxembourg, as well as highly-qualified personalities from the Central Bank of Indonesia and from Central Banks of the Gulf. This committee will include as well, according to Mr. Ourset, independent personalities such as Mrs. Stella Cox from Great Britain, Mr. Anouar Hassoune from the Moody’s agency in Paris and Mr. Ibrahim Wardé from Tuffs University in Boston – Massachusetts.

Mr. Abdel Maoula El Chaar, Scientific Coordinator of the XIFM, evoked in his speech the details of this program: the content, the organization of courses, the target, the principal courses and modules, etc. Mr. El Chaar explained that the XIFM is a degree of management in Islamic Finance that highlights, in addition to the technical aspects, risk assessment and management, as well as decision making. Mr. El Chaar has namely confirmed the willingness of the ESA to help students finance their studies if they meet the criteria set by the scholarships committee of the XIFM.

Professor Jaap Spronk, Scientific Director of the program, tackled the philosophy behind the program, highlighting that it strives to create synergy between the conventional finance and the Islamic finance in order to enlarge the application fields of this latter.

Finally, His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Jachi, First Vice Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, expressed his trust in the new program. According to Dr. Jachi, this program will certainly be appreciated by the regulators and by the Islamic finance industry as a whole. Dr. Jachi ensured that the XIFM program encompasses all the success factors, especially the know-how of two prestigious academic institutions: the Ecole Supérieure des Affaires and the Rotterdam School of Management.
