The Art Business course gives participants an introduction and overview to the overall art market and the art world at large. It offers students the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge and insight into the most important relevant aspects of the art business, including the role of law and finance in the art world. 

The course will introduce participants to important factors to consider when working with artists, institutions, auction houses and collectors. Emphasis is put on practical aspects such as contracts, valuations, insurance, acquisitions and sales, but the course will also give participants an understanding of the mechanisms and structures that determine price and value as well as the historic background of the art world. 

Visits to local galleries and museums will round out the course. 

The highlight will be a 4 day trip to London, visiting the important museums, galleries and auction houses of the city, as well as exclusive studio visits with leading contemporary artists.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

To give participants an introduction to art and its markets, highlighting the relationship, similarities and contrasts between the art world and other industries

To equip participants with the necessary knowledge to be able to take their first steps in the art world

To offer an introduction to various fields of work within the arts; from the art market itself to public, private, institutional and corporate collection to the role of the museum

To understand the basics of collecting art and valuations

To give participants an introduction and overview of the role that law and finance play in the art world

To give participants practical knowledge of copyright law, insurance, contracts and agreements

To provide participants with insight into how art market trends develop and the possibilities that lie within art as an investment

To introduce participants to the topic of cultural loans and restitution
